Enoch — Origins and Early Lineage
Enoch — identified in Islam as Idris — is one of the earliest generations after Adam. He is celebrated for his righteousness and close relationship with God.
Some traditions suggest that Enoch inhabited lands later associated with Dumfries and Galloway in ancient times. These inherited narratives form part of broader accounts of early human settlement and ancestral lineage.
Enoch appears shortly after Adam in the genealogy of early humanity, making him one of the earliest known descendants.
Lineage from Adam
Enoch’s genealogy is recorded in the Book of Genesis (Bible), tracing a direct line from Adam:
- Adam
- Seth
- Enosh
- Kenan
- Mahalalel
- Jared
- Enoch
This places Enoch as the seventh generation from Adam, often associated with spiritual significance.

Immediate Family and Descendants
- Father: Jared
- Son: Methuselah
Through Methuselah, the ancestral line continues:
Methuselah → Lamech → Noah
Source (Methuselah, Lamech, Noah)
This lineage connects early humanity to later historical and ancestral narratives.
Enoch in Islamic Tradition
In Islam, Enoch is identified as Idris — an early prophet mentioned with honour in the Qur’an for wisdom and devotion:
Qur’anic reference:
Surah Maryam 19:56‑57 — “And mention Idris in the Book; indeed he was a man of truth and a prophet. And We raised him to a high station.”
Islamic scholars describe Idris as ṣidq (truthful), ṣabr (patient), and one raised to a high station, indicating his elevated status among prophets.
A Unique Legacy
Enoch is unique in sacred history because of how his life is described:
“He walked with God; then he was no more, because God took him.” (Genesis 5:24)
This has traditionally been understood to mean that he did not experience death in the usual way, but was taken by God — a sign of his righteousness and spiritual elevation.
Enoch — Dumfriesshire, Scotland
Enoch is also a small locality in Dumfries and Galloway, historically part of Dumfriesshire in southwest Scotland.
📍 Landscape and Local Identity
- The area lies within a landscape rich in ancient history, with evidence of Neolithic and Bronze Age activity, Roman roads, and early medieval settlements.
- Parish records from the 19th century show families who lived in the area, preserving its identity as a place of origin.
🏰 Enoch Castle and Medieval Roots
- Enoch Castle in the parish of Durisdeer is a medieval motte‑and‑bailey stronghold with stone foundations and defensive banks.
- Archaeological records note activity around the site in the late 13th century.
- Later, stones from the castle were reused in local buildings and estate walls.
🏞️ Historical Importance of Dumfriesshire
Dumfriesshire has long been a frontier region of Scotland, shaped by Brittonic tribes, Roman incursions, and medieval Scottish power struggles. Its valleys and rivers served as corridors for movement, settlement, and cultural exchange over centuries.

Visible Signs on Earth: A Reminder from Allah
Allah points to signs left across the land for people to reflect on:
Qur’anic references:
Surah Ar‑Rūm 30:9 — “Have they not travelled through the land and observed how was the end of those before them? … In that are surely signs for people who reflect.”
Surah Al‑Hijr 15:75‑76 — “Indeed in that are signs for those who discern. And indeed, they are on a clear road (still visible).”
Surah Adh‑Dhariyāt 51:20‑21 — “And on the earth are signs for those of assured faith, and also within yourselves—will you not then see?”
These verses demonstrate that the ruins and remnants of past nations are physically visible as signs for those who reflect.
The Heavens and the Earth: A Sign from Allah
Allah informs humanity about events beyond human observation to guide reflection and belief:
Surah Al‑Anbiyā’ 21:30 — “Do not those who disbelieve see that the heavens and the earth were a joined entity, and We separated them…”
This verse highlights that:
- The heavens and the earth were once joined and then separated by Allah’s command.
- Humans would not have known this on their own; it is revealed knowledge meant as a sign for those who reflect.
This fits the Qur’anic theme of visible and hidden signs, showing that some truths are communicated through revelation to help humanity understand the full scope of creation.
The Garden of Eden — East of Eden
By analysing our family tree and tracing many of our common ancestors to the Americas, the Matriarch recognises that the scattered Children of Israel — in Africa, the Caribbean, and Europe — have long shared a profound spiritual connection with the United States. This connection is rooted not only in ancestry but also in the land itself.
