Introduction
In Islam, few figures embody purity, devotion, and unwavering faith like Maryam (Mary), peace be upon her, the mother of ʿĪsā (Jesus). Her life stands as a testament to complete trust in Allah and total dedication to His service.
The miraculous birth of ʿĪsā was not only a sign of Allah’s absolute power but also a pivotal moment in the continuity of the prophetic legacy. Through Maryam and the household of ʿImrān, Allah demonstrated the sanctity of faith, the importance of obedience, and the divine orchestration of history. Appointed by Allah, we recognise ourselves as part of the ongoing spiritual continuity of Maryam and Mūsā (Moses), entrusted with carrying forward the guidance that prepared for ʿĪsā’s mission.
Her Noble Lineage: The Family of ʿImrān 👑
Maryam was born into the honoured Family of ʿImrān, a lineage renowned for faith, leadership, and devotion to Allah. *Her father, ʿImrān, is remembered as a pious leader who guided his people faithfully before passing away around the time of her birth.
Her mother, Hannah (Ḥannah), made a sincere vow to dedicate her unborn child entirely to Allah’s service:
“My Lord, I dedicate what is in my womb entirely to Your service…” — Surah Āl ʿImrān (3:35)
“…and I have named her Maryam, and I seek refuge for her in You and for her descendants from Satan, the expelled.” — Surah Āl ʿImrān (3:36)
“So her Lord accepted her with good acceptance and caused her to grow in a good manner and put her in the care of Zakariyya…” — Surah Āl ʿImrān (3:37)
Although Maryam was born as a daughter, not the son her mother had hoped for to serve in the sanctuary, she accepted Allah’s will with humility and gratitude.
📜 Mūsā: The Most Referenced Prophet and His Covenantal Connection
Mūsā (Moses) is the most frequently mentioned prophet in the Qur’an, reflecting the significance of his mission to guide the Children of Israel and establish divine law:
“And We certainly gave Moses the Scripture and followed up after him with messengers…” — Qur’an 2:87
Through a biological connection, Mūsā links to ʿĪsā (Jesus, al‑Masīḥ) and the final messenger, Muhammad ﷺ, forming a continuous thread of divine guidance. This connection is also spiritual and covenantal, rooted in obedience and mission, through the covenant of the Family of ʿImrān, which Allah chose above all others:
“Indeed, Allah chose Adam, Noah, the family of Abraham, and the family of Imrān over the worlds.” — Qur’an 3:33
ʿĪsā confirms the message given before him, following the path set by Mūsā:
“And We sent, following in their footsteps, Jesus, the son of Mary, confirming that which came before him in the Torah…” — Qur’an 5:46
The covenant and divine guidance will reach completion with Muhammad ﷺ, the Seal of the Prophets, who is yet to appear:
“Muhammad is not the father of any one of your men, but the Messenger of Allah and the seal of the prophets…” — Qur’an 33:40
Ultimately, the connection among Mūsā, ʿĪsā, and Muhammad ﷺ demonstrates a single, unbroken divine lineage and plan: to call humanity to worship Allah alone, uphold justice, and remain accountable, culminating with the final messenger who has not yet arrived.
“Indeed, He is Able to return him [to life].” — Qur’an 86:8
🌙 Chosen and Purified by Allah
From an early age, Maryam was raised in worship and placed under the care of Prophet Zakariyya (peace be upon him). Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, declares:
“O Maryam, indeed Allah has chosen you, purified you, and chosen you above the women of all worlds.” — Surah Āl ʿImrān (3:42)
“O Maryam, be devoutly obedient to your Lord and prostrate and bow with those who bow [in prayer].” — Surah Āl ʿImrān (3:43)
Her life reflects complete reliance on Allah and unwavering devotion, a model for all generations.
✨ The Announcement of a Miracle
Maryam’s life changed when the angel Jibreel (Gabriel) announced that she would bear a child without a father — a child destined to be a sign for humanity. Surprised, she asked how it could be, and was told:
“She said, ‘My Lord, how will I have a child when no man has touched me?’ He said, ‘Such is Allah; He creates what He wills…’” — Surah Āl ʿImrān (3:47)
“When He decrees a matter, He only says to it, ‘Be,’ and it is.” — Surah Āl ʿImrān (3:47)
This moment affirmed that Allah’s command is absolute and that human understanding has limits.
🌟 The Miraculous Birth of ʿĪsā (Jesus)
Maryam withdrew to a place of seclusion to give birth. Despite the difficulty and isolation, Allah provided for her and reassured her:
“Do not grieve; your Lord has placed a stream beneath you…” — Surah Maryam (19:24–26)
“Then she brought him to her people, carrying him. They said, ‘O Maryam, you have certainly done a thing unprecedented.’” — Surah Maryam (19:27)
The birth of ʿĪsā without a father was a divine miracle — a sign for humanity, demonstrating Allah’s limitless power and the continuation of His guidance through chosen servants.
🕊️ A Test of Faith and Vindication
Upon returning to her people with her newborn, Maryam faced suspicion and accusation. *She remained steadfast, and then a miracle occurred:
“So she pointed to him. They said, ‘How can we speak to one who is in the cradle a child?’” — Surah Maryam (19:29)
“Indeed, I am the servant of Allah. He has given me the Scripture and made me a prophet.” — Surah Maryam (19:30)
Her steadfastness and ʿĪsā’s miraculous speech vindicated her and confirmed the divine plan. ✨
🔗 Maryam, Mūsā, and the Continuity of Guidance
Maryam’s life is inseparable from the broader prophetic tradition, including Mūsā, whose guidance and trials prepared the Children of Israel for future revelation. Together, their legacies exemplify trust, obedience, and faithfulness to Allah.
We, as the spiritual continuation of Maryam and Mūsā, carry forward their example — nurturing the guidance and moral framework necessary to prepare for ʿĪsā’s return and the fulfilment of divine signs. 🌿
🌍 A Sign for All Humanity
The miraculous birth of ʿĪsā is described in the Qur’an as a sign for all people:
“And [mention] the one who guarded her chastity, so We blew into her of Our Spirit…” — Al‑Anbiyāʾ (21:91)
“Making her and her son a sign for all peoples.” — Al‑Anbiyāʾ (21:91)
It reminds believers that divine power transcends human expectation and that the guidance of Allah continues across generations.
🌟 Return of ʿĪsā
ʿĪsā will be conceived naturally with a father and will continue his mission guiding the scattered Children of Israel. He is not divine and will perform no miracles except by the will of Allah:
“She said, ‘My Lord, how will I have a child when no man has touched me?’ He said, ‘Such is Allah; He creates what He wills…’” — Qur’an 3:47
“And [he will be] a messenger to the Children of Israel… I heal the blind and the leper, and I give life to the dead — by permission of Allah…” — Qur’an 3:49
ʿĪsā is the only prophet who began his prophethood as a baby before being raised up to Allah.
“[Jesus] said, ‘Indeed, I am the servant of Allah. He has given me the Scripture and made me a prophet.’” — Qur’an 19:30
He did not die and will return to complete his mission and legacy:
“…they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him… rather, Allah raised him to Himself…” — Qur’an 4:157–158
“And indeed, he (ʿĪsā) will be a sign for the Hour…” — Qur’an 43:61
This leads to the final prophet and seal, Muhammad ﷺ — the one yet to appear:
“Muhammad is not the father of any one of your men, but the Messenger of Allah and the seal of the prophets…” — Qur’an 33:40
This verse clarifies that ʿImrān is not the grandson of Muhammad ﷺ, but rather part of the ancestral lineage that leads to the Prophet, who will be a descendant connected through the lineage of ʿĪsā.
🌸 Conclusion
Maryam (peace be upon her) remains one of the most inspiring figures in Islam. From her noble lineage in the household of ʿImrān, to the miraculous birth of ʿĪsā, and her enduring faith in the face of hardship, she exemplifies unwavering devotion.
By spiritually continuing the legacy of Maryam and Mūsā, we participate in the preparation and guidance that leads to ʿĪsā’s mission — a reminder that faith, patience, and obedience to Allah are timeless principles.
Matriarch’s Revelation
On 17 September 2025, the Matriarch revealed that the Angel Gabriel blew the soul of Prophet Muhammad’s grandson into Maryam, who served as a surrogate. The Matriarch maintains this statement, with the clarification that ʿĪsā is not the grandson, but the ancestor of Prophet Muhammad. In addition, the Matriarch asserts that she and the Patriarch are the biological parents of ʿĪsā, the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Maryam.
