🌿 Introduction
Among the most profound stories in the Qur’an is the life of Prophet Joseph (Yūsuf), peace be upon him. He was the son of Prophet Jacob (Yaʿqūb) and the great-grandson of Prophet Abraham (Ibrāhīm), continuing the blessed lineage of prophets who guided humanity toward the worship of Allah.
The Qur’an dedicates an entire chapter to his story — Sūrah Yūsuf — describing it as one of the most beautiful narratives revealed for reflection and guidance.
“We relate to you the best of stories through what We have revealed to you of this Qur’an…” — Qur’an 12:3
Joseph’s life is a powerful example of patience, trust in Allah, and the transformation of hardship into blessing.
🌙 A Dream of the Future
Joseph’s story begins with a dream he shared with his father Jacob. In the dream, he saw eleven stars, the sun, and the moon bowing to him. Jacob recognised that the dream carried great meaning and advised Joseph to keep it private.
“O my father, indeed I saw eleven stars and the sun and the moon; I saw them prostrating to me.” — Qur’an 12:4
This dream would later be fulfilled in a remarkable way after years of hardship and separation.
🕊️ Betrayed by His Brothers
Joseph’s brothers became jealous of the love their father showed him. Driven by envy, they plotted against him and threw him into a well, telling their father that a wolf had taken him.
Though Jacob was deeply saddened, he responded with patience and trust in Allah.
Joseph was eventually discovered by travellers and taken to Egypt, where he was sold and raised in a noble household. What appeared to be tragedy was, in reality, the beginning of a divine plan.
⚖️ A Test of Integrity
As Joseph grew into adulthood, he faced another severe trial. A woman of the household attempted to tempt him into wrongdoing. Despite the pressure placed upon him, Joseph chose faith and righteousness over temptation.
He prayed to Allah for protection:
“My Lord, prison is more beloved to me than that to which they invite me.” — Qur’an 12:33
Because of false accusations, Joseph was imprisoned. Yet even in prison he remained patient and continued to trust in Allah.
🔑 From Prison to Leadership
While in prison, Joseph demonstrated wisdom and insight by interpreting dreams for other prisoners. His reputation eventually reached the ruler of Egypt, who summoned him to interpret a troubling dream about years of famine and prosperity.
Joseph explained that Egypt would experience years of abundant harvest followed by years of severe drought. His interpretation proved true, and the ruler entrusted him with responsibility over the land’s resources.
“Thus We established Joseph in the land to settle therein wherever he willed.” — Qur’an 12:56
Joseph’s patience and integrity transformed his trials into a position of honour and leadership.
👨👦 Reunion with His Family
During the years of famine, Joseph’s brothers travelled to Egypt seeking food. They did not initially recognise the brother they had wronged years earlier.
Eventually Joseph revealed his identity and forgave them, demonstrating remarkable compassion.
“No blame will there be upon you today. Allah will forgive you.” — Qur’an 12:92
Jacob and the rest of the family later arrived in Egypt, fulfilling Joseph’s childhood dream.
🌿 The Fulfilment of the Dream
When Joseph’s parents and brothers were reunited with him, they honoured him in a way that symbolised the fulfilment of the dream he had seen as a child.
Joseph recognised that everything that had happened — the well, the slavery, the imprisonment — was part of Allah’s wisdom.
“My Lord, You have given me authority and taught me the interpretation of dreams…” — Qur’an 12:101
His story illustrates that what appears to be hardship may ultimately lead to unexpected blessings.
