🌿 Introduction
Among the honoured prophets mentioned in the Qur’an is Prophet Shuʿayb (peace be upon him). He was sent to the people of Midian, a community known for their commercial wealth but also for dishonesty, corruption, and idolatry.
Shuʿayb’s mission emphasised honesty in trade, fairness in dealings, and sincere worship of Allah. His story teaches believers that material prosperity must never come at the expense of faith, integrity, and justice.
“And to Madyan [We sent] their brother Shuʿayb. He said, ‘O my people, worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him. Give full measure and full weight and do not defraud people of their due.’” — Qur’an 11:84
🤲🏿 Shuʿayb’s Message to the People of Midian
Shuʿayb called his people directly to righteousness. He reminded them that wealth and trade were blessings from Allah, not excuses for corruption or dishonesty.
He said:
“And do not commit abuse on the earth, spreading corruption.” — Qur’an 11:85
Shuʿayb’s mission focused on:
- Upholding honesty in business and trade
- Treating others fairly and avoiding deception
- Worshipping Allah sincerely and abandoning false gods
Despite his wisdom and clear guidance, many of the people of Midian rejected his message and continued their corrupt practices.
❌ Rejection and Arrogance
The people of Midian were wealthy and proud. They believed their prosperity made them untouchable and refused to acknowledge Shuʿayb’s warnings.
“They said, ‘O Shuʿayb, does your prayer command you that we should leave what our fathers worshipped, or not do what we please with our wealth?’” — Qur’an 11:87
Their arrogance led them to mock Shuʿayb and resist his call to honesty, justice, and faith.
⏳ Shuʿayb’s Patience and Perseverance
Despite facing rejection, Shuʿayb remained steadfast. He reminded his people that only Allah could grant true success and that they would be held accountable for their actions.
“O my people, ask forgiveness of your Lord; then repent to Him. He will send the sky upon you in showers and increase your strength in wealth and children.” — Qur’an 11:52
Shuʿayb’s life demonstrates that prophets guide with wisdom, patience, and moral courage, even in the face of widespread opposition.
⚡ The Punishment of the Disbelievers
Despite Shuʿayb’s repeated warnings, the majority of the people continued their deceit and corruption. Allah decreed a severe punishment for their disobedience.
“And the earthquake seized them, and they lay lifeless in their homes.” — Qur’an 11:94
Only the believers who followed Shuʿayb were saved by Allah’s mercy. His story highlights that divine justice ultimately prevails.
